Sowerby Brige Wharf

Sowerby Bridge Wharf Mosaic Project
British Waterways

Sowerby Bridge Wharf is at the end of the Calder & Hebble Navigation, at its junction with the Rochdale Canal. The site is listed Grade 2, and has been restored by British Waterways, Calderdale Council and the Sowerby Bridge Forum, together with the Heritage Lottery Fund, Yorkshire Forward and Regeneration Through Heritage (Prince's Regeneration Trust). The Wharf now has by a pub and two restaurants, as well as a coffee shop, hairdressers, ladies' gym and offices.

It is a beautifully restored area which is made more colourful by the boats moored at the wharf, including boats for hire from the Shire Cruisers hire boat company.

British Waterways have given their permission for me to create a mosaic on a sweeping wall at the sanitary station, which can be viewed through a large arched glass window.

CP Group Ltd for tiles and decorative tiles

So far I have a photographer on board to take photos of canal fauna and flora for me to use in the initial design work for the mosaic. The photographs can then be exhibited in the display space on the other side of the wing housing the sanitary station whilst the mosaic building is in progress.

Next I have the support of the CP Group Ltd who will supply the tiles for the project. The CP Group is one of the UK's biggest tile and stone suppliers with complete in-house facilities for the design and production of 'added value' decorative tiles and borders.

Funding still has to be raised for this project. I need to secure at least 10% of the total cost before applying to Arts Council England for the balance. If you have any ideas for raising funding for this project please contact myself (details above), or Graham Ramsden at British Waterways. You can call Graham on 01132 816 893, or click here to email him.
